Introduction:
The Indian government broadcaster, Prasar Bharati, plans to launch its own over-the-top (OTT) streaming service by August. This platform will feature content that highlights Indian culture and society, ensuring it remains suitable for family viewing. The initiative responds to public concerns about the content available on private OTT services like Netflix and Hotstar.
What Government Stand On It?
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has included the OTT platform in its 100-day plan, contingent upon securing a third consecutive term. Criticism has been directed towards the content offered by private OTT platforms, labeling it as “vulgar” and “abusive,” prompting concerns within the government. In March, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting took action against 18 OTT platforms under the Information Technology Act, 2000, due to the display of “vulgar and obscene” material. A parliamentary panel also discussed the necessity of regulating content on platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime in May 2023, intensifying scrutiny on this issue.
- Prasar Bharati has collaborated with renowned content creators such as the Sri Adhikari Brothers, Vipul Shah (producer and director), and Kabir Bedi (actor).
- These partnerships aim to produce top-notch programs that educate viewers about diverse cultures. Additionally, in September 2023, Prasar Bharati released a preliminary contract outlining the specifications for developing, operating, and managing the OTT platform.
