Applying for a PAN Card Online via Mobile in India (2025)
You can apply for a new PAN card or correct/update an existing PAN entirely online from home using your smartphone. The Government of India provides official portals and apps (NSDL/Protean eGov and UTIITSL) for this. Two main routes exist:
Instant e-PAN (with Aadhaar): A completely paperless option on the Income Tax e-Filing portal. If you have an Aadhaar linked to your mobile, you can get a free, digitally signed e-PAN within minutes.
Standard Online Application (Form 49A/49AA): Use the NSDL (Protean eGov) or UTIITSL PAN portals or their mobile apps to fill Form 49A (for Indian citizens) or 49AA (for foreigners). You can choose paperless modes (Aadhaar e-KYC with eSign) or the traditional mode (fill, print, sign, and courier the form).
Below are detailed steps for both new PAN and correction/update, using mobile browsers or official apps.
- Instant e-PAN (New PAN via Aadhaar e-KYC)
The Income Tax Department’s e-Filing portal offers an “Instant e-PAN” service for individuals with Aadhaar. This is a pre-login, paperless process to get a new PAN free of charge.
Steps:
- Open your mobile browser and go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal (incometax.gov.in). Select “Instant e-PAN” on the homepage.
- Choose “Get New e-PAN”. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and confirm the declaration.
- Consent to use Aadhaar and click Continue. You will receive an OTP on your mobile (linked with Aadhaar). Enter the OTP to authenticate your Aadhaar.
- The system will fetch your Aadhaar details (name, DOB, etc.). Confirm or update as needed and submit. A confirmation message with a unique Acknowledgement ID is displayed on screen and sent to your mobile/email.
- Within minutes, the e-Filing portal generates a digitally signed e-PAN (PDF). You can download it instantly or log into e-Filing later to retrieve it. The e-PAN is equally valid for all purposes.
This Instant e-PAN process uses Aadhaar-based e-KYC/eSign so you do not need to upload any documents or photos. The e-PAN is free (no fees). Note that this service is only for individuals who do not already have a PAN and have an Aadhaar with a linked mobile number. If your Aadhaar is already linked to a PAN, the portal will prompt you accordingly.
- Online PAN Application via NSDL/UTIITSL
If you do not qualify for Instant e-PAN (e.g. you are not an individual, or prefer the traditional procedure), you can apply using the NSDL Protean eGov or UTIITSL portals. These can be accessed via mobile browser or their mobile apps. Both sites allow:
New PAN (Form 49A/49AA)
Change/Correction in PAN Data or Reprint of PAN (for existing PAN holders)
Steps (using NSDL Protean or UTIITSL site/app):
- Open the Portal/App: On your phone, go to NSDL’s PAN portal (e.g. onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam) or UTIITSL’s PAN portal (e.g. pan.utiitsl.com), or install the official MyPAN app (Android/iOS) by UTIITSL. (These interfaces are mobile-friendly.)
- Select Application Type: Choose “New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A)” or “New PAN – Foreign (Form 49AA)” for new PAN. For corrections, select “Changes/Correction in existing PAN” (sometimes called CSF). Specify your category (Individual, HUF, Company, etc).
- Fill Applicant Details: Enter your personal details exactly as per your identity documents (especially Aadhaar, if using e-KYC). Provide your full name, date of birth, email, mobile number, and communication address. (For individuals, it’s mandatory to include father’s name and Aadhaar if available.)
- Choose Mode – Digital vs. Physical:
Digital Mode (paperless): Select the Aadhaar e-KYC/eSign option if you want a fully online process. In this mode, your Aadhaar is authenticated and an OTP e-sign is used to sign the form electronically. No printing or sending of documents is needed. (UTIITSL charges a small extra fee of ₹5.90 for Aadhaar eSign.)
Physical/E-Sign Mode: If you do not use Aadhaar e-KYC, you can choose to upload scanned proofs and use Aadhaar OTP eSign (UTIITSL’s “eSign Mode” also uses Aadhaar) or a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). Alternatively, you can select Physical mode, which requires printing the form.
- Upload Documents (if not paperless): If not using paperless mode, upload scanned copies (JPEG/PDF) of identity proof, address proof, date-of-birth proof, and photographs as required. For corrections, also upload a copy of your existing PAN as proof. (Acceptable documents for Indians include Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving license, etc. – see next section.)
- Pay Fees Online: Proceed to payment. For Indian addresses, the processing fee is about ₹107 (incl. GST). (UTIITSL quotes ₹107 in their FAQs.) If you choose only an electronic PAN (e-PAN) and opt out of receiving the physical card, a lower fee (~₹72 including GST) applies. Payment modes: credit/debit card, net banking, UPI, etc. (For foreign addresses, higher charges apply.)
- Finalize Application: After payment, if using Aadhaar e-KYC, you’ll authenticate Aadhaar and provide OTP for eSign on the portal. The completed application will show an Acknowledgement number on screen. Save or note this number. (If not paperless, print the signed acknowledgement and post it to the agency as instructed.)
Tip: If using UTIITSL’s MyPAN app, you can do all these steps in-app (it even lets you fill forms offline and resume). The MyPAN app explicitly supports applying via Physical/eSign/eKYC modes for both new PAN and corrections. It also includes a “Track Your PAN” feature.
- Correction/Update of Existing PAN
The above portals/apps also handle PAN corrections/updates (e.g. name change, address update) via Form 49A (Composite PAN application). The steps are similar to new PAN, but choose the “Change/Correction” option. Key points:
Always provide the existing PAN number and attach a copy of the PAN as proof.
Upload documentary proof for each change (e.g. marriage certificate or gazette for name change, new address proof if address changed). The UTIITSL document list gives examples (marriage certificate, gazette notification, partnership deed, etc.).
You may also use Aadhaar e-KYC/eSign to update details (the “Instant e-PAN” facility on e-Filing can also update your PAN as per Aadhaar if you already have one). In that case, your PAN record is updated electronically and you’ll get an acknowledgement. Otherwise, complete the application and pay the standard fee.
After submission, you will receive a new physical PAN card (replacing the old one) by post. The old PAN remains valid until updated by IT Dept.
- Mobile Apps and UMANG
Aside from browser portals, there are official mobile apps:
UTIITSL MyPAN (Android/iOS): An app by UTIITSL for PAN services. Users can apply for a new PAN or request corrections (via Physical/eSign/eKYC) and pay online. It also provides status tracking and form download. (1M+ downloads on Google Play).
UMANG – “My PAN” Service: The central UMANG app (Android/iOS) includes a My PAN service managed by UTIITSL. It allows new PAN applications, corrections, and downloading e-PAN. The UMANG app is government-authorized and free.
NSDL/Protean Mobile: NSDL does not have a dedicated app, but its mobile website (onlineservices.nsdl.com) works on smartphones.
Using these apps or mobile sites, you can fill forms on-the-go. The UTIITSL MyPAN app’s description notes you can track your PAN status within it. In fact, UTIITSL reports that status updates are typically available 3–4 days after submission, though delivery of the physical PAN card may take 2–4 weeks by post. (For NSDL-based applications, you can also visit NSDL’s PAN status tracking page and enter your 15-digit acknowledgement to get updates.)
- Documents, Fees, and e-KYC
Identity/Address Proof: For Indian applicants, acceptable proofs include Aadhaar card, Passport, Voter ID, Driving License, Government photo ID cards, etc.. You must attach one proof of identity and one proof of address (the names must match the applicant). (Aadhaar serves as both proof ID and address.) Other accepted address proofs include recent utility bills, bank statements, election ID, etc.. For date-of-birth proof, common documents are Birth Certificate, matriculation certificate, passport, or Aadhaar.
Existing PAN Proof (for corrections): Attach a copy of your current PAN card or PAN allotment letter as proof of existing PAN. Without this, correction applications may be returned.
Photograph & Signature: Attach two recent passport-size color photos and sign/thumbprint on the form/acknowledgement as required. (Digital e-KYC applications may use your Aadhaar photo and eSign.)
Fees: The online processing fee (incl. GST) is approximately ₹107 for an Indian address. This covers issuance of a new tamper-proof PAN card. If you choose only an e-PAN (no physical card), the fee is lower (around ₹72 inc. GST). For foreign addresses, higher fees (~₹1020 + GST) apply. UTIITSL notes an extra ₹910 dispatch charge for foreign mailing. If you use Aadhaar eSign on UTIITSL, an extra ₹5.90 is added. Fees are paid online (cards, net banking, UPI) or via demand draft/cheque as instructed.
Aadhaar e-KYC Option: If you choose the Aadhaar-based e-KYC (paperless) mode, no physical documents or mails are needed. In this mode, after payment and Aadhaar authentication (with OTP), the system fetches your KYC data from UIDAI and uses Aadhaar eSign to sign the application. UTIITSL specifically notes that “the applicant does not need to send any files/printouts” when e-KYC is used. This is the fastest method: once your Aadhaar is verified and OTP confirmed, the application is complete.
Payment: For Indian applicants, you can pay via credit/debit card, net banking, UPI, or bank challan. (If paying by cheque/DD to NSDL, it must be drawn on a Mumbai bank or HDFC branch.) In digital mode, payment is online before Aadhaar OTP.
- Processing Time and Tracking
Processing Time: Instant e-PAN is literally instantaneous (minutes) if Aadhaar OTP is successful. For regular applications, once your form is submitted (and any required documents received), NSDL/UTIITSL typically process it within about 7–15 days. After processing, the physical PAN card is printed and mailed: expect delivery 2–4 weeks from application.
Status Tracking: You can track the status online:
NSDL: Use the NSDL PAN Status page (Protean eGov) to enter your 15-digit acknowledgement/token and check status.
UTIITSL: Visit UTIITSL’s PAN status portal or use the MyPAN app/UMANG, entering either the acknowledgement number or PAN. (UTIITSL suggests status is usually updated within 3–4 days of document submission.)
The portals may send SMS/email alerts at key stages (acknowledgement received, PAN allotted, card dispatched). Keep your mobile number and email updated so you receive these updates.
